Alan, I absolutely love the concept of your book, the metaphysical aspect, ingenious uses of pop culture references including what happens with the 7-11 store, that songs are interwoven throughout the book and the visuals and colors which make the book a sort of verbal painting, mural or scrapbook of colorful photos. And I absolutely love the title and am a huge fan of murder mysteries.
I am someone who is passionate about the arts - visual, music, written word, and spoken word. I was the administrative assistant to the Executive Director of The Writers Guild of America in New York.

Wow, this is an incredibly great start to what seems like is going to be an amazing novel! I really enjoyed reading it and it affected me in a way I did not imagine. It was funny and unlike anything I have ever read before. It is a really imaginative world and I think it will help everyone who’s reading it, get their creative juices flowing! I think what appeals the most about it is that anything is possible. It gives me a fun sense of "anything can happen" "anything can be real." Which I know people would love to think about because it gives them an escape from their dreary world.
I would say this would be a great hard book, but unfortunately in this day and age "hard cover" books are almost going extinct which deeply saddens me. This would be great on IPAD or Kindle! I truly enjoyed reading this! Thank you Alan!!

What interests me is that it’s different than others. You don’t see stories like this every day. It’s creative, out of the ordinary, and it really catches my attention. From the first couple of lines there’s so much going on that i want to keep on reading.

Alan, What really captures my interests about DUKES AND THE NUKES is the high concept of the plot and the anomalous characters that are in it. I believe it has the potential to be on the new and powerful voices of our unorthodox generation. The characters seem like they are going to be just as dynamic and compelling as the people they are based off of and I can't wait to see how you incorporated them into your story. DUKES AND THE NUKES seems like an epic and I can't wait to start the journey.
I believe the protagonist will have a unique and captivating point of view in this story simply because it's so different from anything people will read. From the experts I read, it's very well written, with lots of dazzling imagery. It really speaks to the senses as well the mind, making you question the reality of it all, and I think that's what great writers do: to make the reader think.

I very much enjoyed reading your novel. I found it to be entertaining, insightful & thought provoking. For myself, I feel it identifies with my observations regarding our society and how much power and influence mass media has on the public. I have found it both astounding and frightening the manipulation of the general public by the media. It appears that most persons today believe the information disseminated as fact, without question. Being an individual who continually questions the accuracy of information received from the media, I find your work most intriguing.
Perhaps the fact that your work is very much structured like a film/television script and the reality TV content bring such references to mind. Its descriptiveness also makes it quite easy for the reader to visualize (with audio) the scenarios. In addition, some of the characters and situations are remind me of persons with whom I have been acquainted in my past. I personally have known many persons most politely described as "unconventional".
In essence, I find your work to be a refreshing observation of contemporary society and U.S. capitalism, mass media and consumerism.

Alan, There is a lot going on in the first chapter where it will keep you under suspense to continue to read it is that there are so many characters and trying to understand each of them. I am looking at this as a script like Pulp Fiction but newer again. I would have to say it is quite interesting because I had to read it all the way through and why I wanted to really get the sense of what was happening and I was intrigued to continue to read it I am thinking it would be a great hard copy and even be interesting to download.

Hi Alan, The concept of the book is fascinating. The idea of a DJ being able to solve a murder because of his unique insight into the club scene makes for a great foundation to your novel.

Hi Alan, I enjoyed reading this glimpse of Duke and the Nukes. It is very different and interesting. The way it is written definitely takes you to a different time...the future. Or even present day under different circumstances. I'm very interested to read on and find out how the story plays out.
The most interesting thing to me is the way you have written it. It's formatted almost as if the reader is reading a television script or scenes from a movie. Which I think is cool and unexpected.
As far as a change in perception, honestly, it is a work of fiction and most will take it in as such and not have much change in their thoughts after reading it. Except that all authors a have a unique writing style and they are all celebrated for their differences. This definitely appeals to the Sci-Fi readers.

Alan, as I read your novel, DUKES AND THE NUKES, I am instantly brought to the world of the Z generation. Reality and fiction mixed all into one. Quickly it takes me into the world of all the characters and locations. It is amazing to say and to agree with you -- that the world could actually be taken over by social media, internet and reality shows. The description and your choice of words bring the scene to life.
Martin himself is a character all in his own who I instantly tried to unravel; questioning myself which part of him is real and which part was not. I do appreciate the first chapter's description of each scene and character. It takes off quick and for some time I found myself re-reading the previous paragraph to make sure I get down the characters and their roles. As a reader I must understand that this is a story being told from an author who writes directly from his thoughts and subconscious directly, so I should let my mind travel with his words as I continue reading. The story is more effective that way and the world of the Z generations between the killing, clubs scene, government scenes and lusting over beautiful woman all will collide into one. I have to let my mind take in the words and make up my own imagination and let the script play into my mind as a reality show or movie in its self. I can tell that the enjoyment factor is there because it keeps one guessing how and when the characters run into each other.
I enjoyed the aspect of BE-LIVE, the descriptions of different characters and where they're from, Sobe, 7-11, South Beach, etc. You were able to place these details in the story because it is how today's society is -- trendy and cool. It is true; the money, the fame, the glitz and glamour -- why do we all yearn for it? It could be a blessing or a tragedy if you do not know how to balance it all. Is happiness truly there? The perceptions of what I may want in life and what I work hard for is actually really different. After reading the first chapter, it leaves me questioning; why do most people my age want all that...the glitz and the glamour but I guess it comes with today's society always wanting more; which can be a good thing or a bad thing.

Hello Alan, I have to admit that I did get some goosebumps as I read DUKE AND THE NUKES. I don't even know where to begin telling you how identified I feel with your book.

I think DUKE AND THE NUKES is very unique and compelling, with the different aspects it has, a great crime story, real characters, and a reality show, or is it really? It interests me because of all the different aspects to it. You have a brilliant crime thriller, packed full of energy, and you have real characters, and the energy is high and fast moving.

Alan, What I like about DUKE AND THE NUKES is the way you get to incorporate your own life experiences to your book. But that is only the starting point because you make them yours by adapting them to your inner world and personal way of expression. One of the virtues I most respect and admire from artists is the ability to find a unique voice and style. I think your writing has that quality. And that is the kind of art I like, the one that is honest and real.

As far as Duke and the Nukes: I think reality television is such an amazing market to crack open with writing. Not many people have written novels or publications about the world of reality TV, and I think it's such an amazing platform to be on. I LOVE the idea, plus it seems to have an in depth story with great twists and turns, humor and drama. I'm excited to see it on the shelves someday soon and actually read it. I think it's got a great character structure as well as a few intertwined interesting plot lines. I'm excited to see where it goes, and how it takes off.

Your book is fantastically creative and "out there," which completely appeals to me. It had me feeling a "Metamorphic," futuristic "Fear and Loathing," type of story with incredible detail and imagery
- Joe DeBonis

I really like how Duke and the Nukes combines reality with fiction. What makes it even more interesting is even though fictionalized the book is based on actual people and places in Miami . I think if someone is not from around or does not live here they may not believe some of the outrageous, interesting and exciting people and places in Miami Beach. I am also intrigued to read the glimpse of the future part and think about the new trends, traits and technology advances that will follow the Z Generation. It is is easy to forget what life was like before the advanced technology, internet, social media and networking the Z Generation has brought us and hard to believe that we will come become even more tech savvy.

The separation by location is interesting and the futuristic sense is fantastic.

I like the concept of the "generation Z", I think it is definitely the era we are in right now and that it's not looking to change but it's looking to grow. It looks like to me that Dukes and the Nukes isn't going to disappointment. I did enjoy reading the first chapter.
- Amanda Carol

Alan, The ambiguous nature of the narrative—it’s reality show quality, or that of a story within a story, a dream, something that may or may not be happening. I’ve read a lot of Borges, Marquez, Rushdie and the magic realists, as well as Henry Miller, Bukowski, DFW and Burroughs, whose styles it seems you are attempting to blend, which I find unique and exciting! The novel sounds simple but equally complex.
- Ronan Cain
…………………………………………………………………………..
What really strikes me is how the first-person point of view just jumps off the page, and I can actually hear the character saying the words. I also love the frenetic nature that is created through your usage (or, actually, non-usage) of punctuation, and how those frantic moments capture very modern and metropolitan ideas. The structure of your first chapter, made up of many “mini chapters” is a really ideal way to present a piece of work that deals so closely with Generation Z, the generation of shortcuts, short forms, 140-character messages, and so forth. You definitely have a multitude of characters here that I want to read more about!
I think the appeal of DUKE AND THE NUKES extends beyond people like myself who identify as a member of Generation Z. The language and phrasing is so intricate, and it is simply a pleasure to read. I could most clearly imagine this appearing as an E-Book, Kindle, and hard copy.
- Anna Ross

Alan. Unbelievable! How chapter one is divided kept me wanting more information about what is next to happen. From my point of view it seems like Martin is stuck in his own world AKA reality TV and he doesn't know it yet or he is dead and living in LIMBO or using a lot of hallucinogen drugs - neverth less this is a trippy novel. Just by reading chapter one you can’t understand what is going on yet with Martin, so it leaves the reader in mystery which is great. It’s exciting how the scenes jump randomly because you wouldn't expect it to but then again it reminds us that something isn't right. My mind is blown away, is it that reality TV is so brain washing that martin can’t get a grasp of real life anymore?
Is the social media just an outlet that has no restrictions that allows anyone to do whatever they please, even if its real or not. It will definitely awaken the minds of the younger generation (Z Generation). Martin seems like he’s stuck in this unparalleled universe that he can’t control or get out of. And the people that he knows and runs into, are all the people on his Facebook or twitter or some other social media.
I really liked how each paragraph gave a description like a movie scene. i would love to keep on reading the book for further information on the story plot. It seems like it could be a touching story to all social media users. It will open up their minds to what’s real and what’s fake. For example on Facebook i can be a purple dinosaur that is the shit to everyone and have millions of followers loving my tacky style but in reality I'm a 23 year old girl that is pretty normal. But if i keep on with that persona then i could actually start believing my own lie then that's where it can become a serious problem which i think Martin has.
This story is hip, up to date, a mind blowing excitement, that the reader will sure enough get a trip of their own. Since the story is about social outlets/media i would think DUKE AND THE NUKES will sell best as a eBook/kindle/online copy.

Alan, I have to say, this going to be quite an intriguing novel. I am very excited to see where this goes. After reading the first chapter I began to get a very deep sense of how the world and ESPECIALLY the Z generation is virtually a slave to social media. We tend to seek approval from the world with our own personal sites and information we put out there. It makes me think about how careless we can be with our information and of course, the way we treat others through the invisible cloak of a keyboard.
It is a truly entertaining opening to the book and I feel most connected and and interested in your very vivid and imaginative descriptions of the women in the novel. Maybe because I am a girl? I could just picture them so clearly. Not to say that it wasn't the case with the men but I just felt a stronger connection to those descriptions.
I feel that it could change the perception of social media today by truly making a mockery of what we now rely on as "normal" communication with one another. It really makes you almost feel ashamed of how much our lives revolve around social media. As for appealing to readers; this may sound weird to you but the image in my head came across as something from Tom Wolfe and Stanley Kubrick combined. That may seem crazy but that is where my head went. I think you could have a wide range of readers with that type of description.
- Ginger Drysdale

It is definitely intriguing form what I read. I'm curious about how the story is executed through stream-of-consciousness of that particular style (James Joyce's "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man"). I am also interested about the reality show dynamic and how that translates into writing. And of course, I am Miami girl, born and raised, so it's interesting to finally read about real people that you could relate to.
- Mildred Petit

Dukes and the Nukes is an incredibly complex novel It seems as though it allows the reader easy relation with the lead character, while still distancing itself far enough from the identity of the action that it likely captivates its audience in a whirlwind of philosophic and energy-filled dissolution. A very interesting preposition to the novel as a whole. I thrive on philosophical and moral discussion of the human condition.
- David Marr III

I am a person who thinks in a high visual style. With that said I'm seeing DUKE AND THE NUKES beyond the written book form and already as a major motion picture. I love the Generation Z, Social networking and Reality show angle. Like many people I too am hooked on reality shows and my Facebook page.
- Fabian Blue

Your novel sounds enticing, a pair of eyes into the kaleidoscopic city where a person can find themselves in a parallel universe! One can only imagine what a DJ in Miami experiences around him. Was the explosion he thinks is real actually a crazy night in an extravagant night filled with flashing lights, loud music, sweaty dancing, sequins, beautiful people, and spiked cocktails swirled together in his mind or an actual nuclear attack?
Your novel sounds very exciting knowing the reality that to outsiders seems make-believe actually happens in our lively, alluring, seductive city where anything goes. Your novel will be a huge success and should make an easy transition on to the small or big screen.
- Jennifer Johnson

It certainly is a book that inspires creativity, brings forth imagination, the unexpected, alternative realities which will take the reader to new dimensions where everything can possibly be interpreted through the eyes of the reader, maybe explaining the role of human existence or explaining metaphysics and the nature of being oneself in the midst of infinite possibilities, while, at the same time, emerging into a scene of suspense and intriguing actions that would keep the reader connected and embedded into a web of complex imagery, some kind of self-illumination and discovery mixed with an adventure portrayed by characters that will blow your mind.

I really enjoy the idea of the serious social commentary in the midst of all this absurdity. I really enjoy social/behavioral psychology and anthropology, and this novel has a lot of it in the subtext. I want to see how it all comes together, because it seems like there are so many things going on that couldn't possibly have anything to do with each other, but of course they do. The nuclear war is the part that seems most incongruent, so I'm interested in seeing what part it plays in the story unfolding. I'm probably mostly drawn to it being a satire than anything else. I think satires tend to be most honest and revealing.
- Whitney Yoham ……………………………………………………………………………
After reading the first chapter, I am definitely intrigued! I have to say I love your choice of words, vivid imagery and descriptions like that of the drooling alarm clock and the colliding galaxies. The cast of characters are definitely oddballs as you mentioned in your ad, I wonder if Martin is crazy, on drugs, or maybe the only sane character in the bunch. The Disc Jockey scene right before he gets arrested where he remarks on reality is somewhat familiar and striking to me.
Having experienced the Miami club scene and going to EDM festivals and events, knowing many intelligent party people who love to get metaphysical and philosophical, the concepts of reality and illusion are of particular interest to me and I’m enjoying seeing how it relates to the rest of the novel. I thoroughly enjoy the eclectic humor; I laughed a lot at that sandwich ad, and picturing a crazy model singing of bulimia made me chuckle. I also found the police officer’s response to Martin’s philosophical diatribe in the Audition to be quite funny. The songs are great, well placed and thought-provoking, I especially appreciated the Dead Zone and I think many enlightened young people will be able to identify and questions their perception of the idea of soul-sucking social media and the need for an inflated sense of self-importance. I’d like to know where Duke and the Nukes will take me and how all these scenes may intersect and what if anything is actually “real."

I enjoyed the first chapter, how you described and introduced your beginning characters . The dialogue is what I pictured and hoped for coming from your novel. It caught my attention and made me want to read the 2nd, 3rd 4th... chapters. It is in solidity, entertaining. I like the format and how it's broken down to "scenes" as if you are watching Martin's experience in person. I am getting a good vibe from the story line and first chapter. It's fresh and choice of direction, foundation, spontaneity, free spirit, reality, behind the scenes, true lives of the "infamously famous" formality of the main character are just some of the reasons why any reader your generation or mine would enjoy the novel. I wonder if throughout the book you experienced many of the events and comically included them to be a part of the "reality show" like a compilation of events, turned and twisted into great memorable story. - CC Ben LOULOU
We live in such media driven world, that we are faced with the challenges of what is real or fake. Perception has become our reality. It would be exciting to see how much of an impact Duke and the Nukes will have on people and seeing how they relate their life to the book.

I think Duke and the Nukes sounds contemporary, exciting, and is the first of an upcoming shift in modern fiction. I love that it blends many genres and also forces its readers to think about what our "plugged in" world will mean in twenty years. I have a personal interest in the rise of technology and how it's started to blur the lines of our lives!

I really connect with the subject matter, I have strong feelings about today’s reality TV culture, and to be honest, I have great distain for this type of reality show entertainment. A few months back I saw an Italian film titled ‘Reality’ which satirized the TV reality show marvelously well, showing it to be generally destructive on the human condition. I’m also excited with the surrealistic nature of your novel. Your book sounds similar to things such as ‘Naked Lunch’, ‘Junky’, ‘Post Office’ and these are books and worlds I really enjoyed delving into. Also it feels somewhat like a David Lynch film, which is never a bad thing.
-James Knight

I love novels that challenge the mind, and provoke the reader to question things about life outside of the book. It seems to me this novel possesses just that. It is so relevent to what is going on with the world in terms of social media, and the rise of reality television, I think it will be something very successful. Society has become so consumed with reality television, and despite being aware that it is indeed
scripted, we have adopted it as reality, forever altering the definition of what is real. This novel will allow people to engage in the conversation of where society is headed, something younger generations need to consider.
-Sarah Stevens

The idea of a reality show novel perfectly describes the post-modernism of today's youth. Much in the spirit of Palahniuk's Invisible Monsters, or anything by Bret Easton Ellis, your novel sounds like it breaks down the notions of traditional form in order to suit its own needs. It's so representative of a youthful culture that just doesn't have the patience for tradition, not that they would want it anyway. With characters reminiscent of Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, the novel seems to satire the drama the Z generation creates in their own lives, creating characters so real they could only be part of an imagination. I anticipate the novels release in that I think it will capture a very elusive mentality that many, including Arthur Nersesian, have failed to adequately represent. -Donika Selca

How it affected me: Immediately, the reader feels close to Martin. By entering his mind and not simply his actions and showing the shabby nature of his home, the reader relates to this starving actor. For me personally, the marriage of this writing style with my modern world brought me into the novel's world. Most books that I've read with this style were written before my time; I could understand the stories, but I rarely related to them in a real way. This book brings this style to my modern world. The issues addressed are my generation's issues, and this is a very important change.
Touching to me: The very end of the chapter struck me in a powerful way. I've never read a more accurate description of the Feeling. There are few things in this world more empowering than the rush of controlling a wild crowd using only music. Reading the episode called The Hero with 1000 Faces makes you feel the power and confidence Martin has when spinning.
Most interesting aspect: After the first chapter, the aspect of the story holding my interest most strongly is the mystery of it all. What's real and what's hallucination? Did a bomb really go off? What's audition and what's the main act? How do these characters fit together?
How will it change the perception of other young people? The book wipes the makeup off this modern world's 'lives of the rich and famous.' Underneath, the reader can see the struggles of these worlds, the absurdity. As a picture of Generation Z, the puts a twist on common content. The fabulous and extravagant are shown as the darker side of life, and technology is shown as something that both distances and connects people. These tensions affect the reader, especially younger readers.
What readers will it appeal to? The style might turn away the younger teen crowd, but it hardly seems to be written for them anyway. This novel will appeal to everyone from older high school students to those in their twilight years that remember the first time they picked up Howl or Naked Lunch. The fast paced, larger than life world the characters live in will hold the interest of younger readers, and the older generations will appreciate the style and commentary provided into the younger reader's lives.
What platform will readers choose? E-book, Kindle, hardcopy, etc While some will download the book to read on their computer, I think Kindle-type devices and hardcopy will be the top forms. There is still a good number of hardcopy purists even in the younger generations. We are a generation of very easily distracted readers. Hardcopy has the advantage of its simplicity; you're somewhat distanced from the one-click-away distractions of tablets, laptops, smartphones and all that. On the other hand, the book's bite sized sections and entertaining language make it a book that you can enjoy in short doses. This helps the case of electronic copies. This book can be enjoyed while waiting for the bus or even waiting for the kettle to boil. It has the feel of a Burroughs novel in that way. The language is entertaining in its own right, but unlike Naked Lunch, there is a continuous plot line and mystery that keeps the reader coming back.
-Peter O’Donnell

Alan, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Dukes and the Nukes with its humor and rhythm reminds me of Vonnegut and Clockwork Orange. What I appreciate about what I have read so far is how complex the novel is. It's not only the image of modern society, of Generation Z, but also the reflection of the world we're living in and how it affects us. It's a philosophical journey that forces us to answer questions like “where is my life going?” and “what is still important?” “does anything make sense in the world so chaotic and absurd?” “if it's all a game, why bother?” “do I still wanna play?” and ”can i actually not be a part of it?”
I am not quite convinced that the novel may create changes in perceptions for young people, or that it would change their behavior and lifestyle, but it may certainly help them realize what kind of world they're living in and make them become more aware of the problem. - Ewa Wlosczuk

Alan, It's my pleasure to send you my comments. Reading DUKE AND THE NUKES was enjoyable to say the least.
It is an intriguing novel that portrays different characters and plays imagery that captivates the reader. The wonders that surround me grow stronger as I immerse myself into complex phenomena of creativity, slowly seducing me into Martin’s IQ to discover the origins of all mistery of this novel. The crime must be unfold, but Martin’s surrealist philosophy and his skeptical view of the universe takes me to a different dimension, a vacuum between imagination and reality.
I attempt to distinguish the mistery behind Martin’s ideals, philosophy of life, the role of the Nuke and the Dukes, Martin The Great. The Dead Zone: “I have tested myself tonight to see if my illusion was an illusion – and it is not an illusion, so I see”, is, among others, one of the tricks Martin plays with my intellect. He is a lonely, awesome, creative, purposeful character that has a plan to blow your intelligence and bring you down to misery. He’s is playing all the cards of this puzzle, the question is, who is playing yours?
I believe this is a very creative novel that will entertain the reader and keep him connected to the many different puzzles and clues that will keep the reader connected to the story, either emotionally, physically, or intellectually, attempting to discover the mistery behind it all. That's exactly how I enjoyed it. I wanted to connect the dots until they made sense to me. Does it have to make sense?!
Martin’s character as an egocentric, lonely, ambitious human being, completely surrealist and a total stranger to society. He wants to win the world, then he creates the momentum to be at the center of the universe while everyone else are merely puppets of his surrealist existence. He surrenders to his own imagination to attain this glory, which creates a complex scene that adds some tasteful insights, leading to clues that will feed your curiosity until the end. Therefore, Martin's character is what interests me the most.
I think Generation Z lives in a post modernism society of a digital age where social media plays an important role in shaping people’s opinions about any topic. Tools such as Facebook, twitter, flikr, wikileak, newspaper, internet news, you tube etc., manipulate information and connect people together around the world. What's more ironic is that, even though we became more connected technologically worldwide, we turned to ourselves more and more, becoming more isolated in this complex society where moral values, principles, and what constituted an "appropriate social behaviour” in the past are no longer parameters to use as a role model for our society today. We have emerged from a past generation that suffered great dissappointments, such as the Vietnam War, Peal Harbor, Hitler Imperialism, Cold War, the Arab Spring, etc. Technology has taken control of our lives in unprecedented ways. Cyber security has become a relevant issue of concern and the respect for privacy amoang states and individuals are no longer respected. We simply grown suspicious about everything and anything. We invaded Iraq under an excuse that didn’t even existed. We spread the name of democracy while doing partnerships with dictatorial regimes. So what defines “proper behaviour” in our society nowadays? We have diverted ourselves and we ve gone too far to establish a society for a new generation that respects no boundaries, and since we’ve grown more alienated today than generations before us, we surrendered to digital technology, our addicting tool that became indipensable for our daily needs. We decided to become isolated thus alienated about the world at large, a vague feeling of not belong anywhere, but everywhere at the same time. It feels like we’re just merely human beings trying to fill a hole we don't really know where it originated. We belong to a current society as diverse, complex, problematic, and apathy about the future as never before. We’re a generation born from the ashes of our ancestors. Many technologies advanced through research that started during earlier generations, and we are currently just trying to fill the hole in order to belong to this great movement of past generations, maybe trying to fill a vacum imposed on us due to tremendous social changes that occurred during the twentieth century.
We are yet to realize we can build a totally different legacy for ourselves that differs from those of our ancestors, a different course of history that will shape society in unprecedental ways, but we must identify these problems in order to advance future plans of action towards a new path and new course in history. The point is: Are we willing to awaken by creating new expectations for ourselves or just feel apathy about the future and blame our losses on previous generations? That’s the fundamental problem each generation must face in order to experience any type of change it wants to pursue. :)
I think this novel will appeal to any reader. It broadens our vision about society, gives insight about current societal problems, alienation, a sense of vagueness if I may say, that affects many young people today, and many are found without a purpose, a vision and a plan to make a change in behaviour. Many young people nowadays face these problems, addicted in drugs and a feeling of hopelessness about themselves, much less the world at large.
Because this will appeal to different types of readers of different ages, and each have distinct flavours about the way they read, I believe this novel could be initially used as an E-book and a hard book purchased in a bookstore or online.

I most enjoy the surreal imagery and detached storyline, revealing parts of the plot in pieces and building the relationship of the different players, but all in a surprising and counter-intuitive way. Reading it, I was reminded of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, or Repo Man, or even some of the writings of Philip K. Dick, all of which relied on surprise to peak audience interest early on.
In particular, I like the implied sense that Martin, the "star", lives in a fantasy world and will actually be the victim of something terrible, his "stardom" accidental, as implied by the scene where he sits in a space suit and is not reacted to by anyone.
I think Duke and the Nukes would work best as an E book, if only as an emphasis of itself as a kind of internet age manifesto, but I don't see any reason for it not to sell in paper format, though not primarily. The industry is going digital, at least so my friend in publishing says, and I think it makes good business and ideological sense to distribute heavily via E book, Kindle, etc. Duke's message for Generation Z, that nothing is necessarily as it seems, should be shared through the most widely sharable form, the internet.

I am drawn to “fast paced” reads because I sometimes find myself skipping over paragraphs of fluff. I relate fictional characters to the people in my life on a daily basis, so I easily relate to how DUKE AND THE NUKES draws from the life of the author and puts a fictionalized filter on things. With every book I read I like to experience something new. Whether it be a twist in the typical murder mystery or a reality show within a novel, This book is a unique read and a clever ride.

Alan, I think the most interesting part of Dukes and the Nukes is that it seems as if the reader has the option of finishing the book with their own vision of what the story was all about. The reader is not sure if the main character is in reality or not. It seems suspenseful yet tasteful with the chicness of the elite social scene from Miami displayed.

Alan, Chapter #1of DUKE AND THE NUKES is impressive to say the least. I could not stop reading it until the very end. The novel is extremely creative with complexities which make it more captivating. My curiosity is definitely peaked! Early in the novel there seems to be an obvious villain or villains and possibly two victims. You do a great job explaining the scenery to really paint a picture in a reader's mind. All of the characters so far are dramatic which makes the novel more interesting to read. The DJ cannot decipher reality. Those worlds seem to blend together in his mind or perhaps he has burned his brain from too many drugs or maybe he really is some type of alien creature here on Earth. It is all interesting, from what goes on in the mind of the DJ to all of the party girls around and the rich men trying to control their worlds to suit them. Whenever a murder happens, a Pandora’s Box is opened that brings light to a usually very dark spider’s web and those caught in it. Every once in a while when I am in a club or a bar on the beach I look around and wonder what kind of people are around me, this book has insight. We Miami girls have been schooled when it comes to street smarts. I am interested to find out how all of the main characters are connected and would like to read more about the DJ. Is he human? J The DJ wants so badly to star on a reality show but does he even live in reality, is this his weakness that is taken advantage of? Can he see things that others cannot and how will this unfold? I think this novel will appeal to many generations and people from all backgrounds, especially those that shared a drink or two with a little loud music some time in their life. Now to read about it on this level will be even more exciting. The Z generation will love this novel as well as those that have been there, done that too! ;) This novel will also appeal to those that want to be taken to another place, creative minds, those that enjoy a challenge. I personally prefer to read books from kindle on my phone now. It is small and my phone goes everywhere with me. I can read no matter where I am that way. In my opinion, I feel more readers will read your novel electronically in some way. It is more convenient.

Alan,
What a whirlwind! Your first chapter of DUKE AND THE NUKES was intriguing and exciting. It's making me think of reality vs non-reality-- what is real vs what is not... And how exciting it is to think about in my own life.
I loved this section in the book where you write that "We are all broken vessels – pottery shards in the universe. Some of us broken from the beginning, because of our genes, or because of past karma, others from life experiences, or just simply because we wish to be broken, so we can mend ourselves and grow. Reality has no purpose, no meaning, no significance, no resemblance to our shadows. Being fixated on theoretical constructs or theoretical mephastophillisian physics or obtuse abstractions serves no purpose but to delude us into thinking all is something, or it is nothing. Purpose, meaning, significance, being, non being, mere entanglements, these are only our commitments to shadows, bold, bold as light, gray as day, hideous creatures, gargoyles, Stark. Stark as Night. Night is easy; the day is a dreadful time. The night is easier because during daytime one does not have to face one’s uncomfortable self, at night one does not have to face one’s death, one’s annihilation."
It is relatable in a universal sense in that we've all had our troubles, our sorrows, and at times, that we all feel like "pottery shards in the universe." You pose the universal question of "why are we here?" and "what does it all mean?" ...Nothing and yet, everything. People see their shadow sides and sometimes struggle to find the light again. This is a universal struggle that can lead to the kind of intriguing and intricate story you are telling.
It's definitely relatable to young people, as they often are the most curious, the most thirsty for those universal questions to be answered and explored. And relatable as far as the "Z Generation," in that that generation is "far out" in terms of technology and lifestyle -- so much new technology all the time and so very fast. Trying to keep up with it can feel overwhelming. It can feel like fiction bc it is so crazy! And I feel that your book is accurately representing that thrust forward in time.
As far as e-book vs kindle vs hardcover.... Kindle books are becoming increasingly popular, but I would say an e-book version may be a good bet as well so people can download it onto their computer. If you could make a low-cost amazon version, I think that would do well. That way you would be able to introduce your work to a larger audience.

Alan, I like your style, your use of colorful sentences such as "The King of Reality, the savior, Jesus on a stick, like a Coney Island candy cone" – that is one of my favorite sentences in DUKE AND THE NUKES .

What I find most interesting about DUKES AND THE NUKES is how it potentially could be taken to the big screen, because the Electronic Dance Music scene has most certainly exploded in recent years.

Alan, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time - Dukes and the Nukes with its Humor and Rhythm reminds me of Vonnegut and Clockwork Orange.
I am not quite convinced that the novel may create changes in perceptions for young people, or that it would change their behaviour and lifestyle, but it may certainly help them realize what kind of world they're living in and make them become more aware of the problem. What concerns me is that you can't really be a part of the contemporary world without all its “be fast, do it fast and be happy” unless you don't mind being left behind.
I don't consider myself as a part of the Generation, but I see your point. What concerns me about the Generation Z is that people take social media too seriously. They try to create a certain image of themselves, express themselves, but they get lost and it becomes more important than reality. They spend more time on FB than hanging out with friends outdoors. Even when they go out they have this need to share whatever they do on FB, whether it's important or not. You can even have some kind of a relationship on FB with people not seeing them for months or years. It's all silly and scary. It seems like fun, but it takes away so much from life. It's a new reality, new life though. You can be whatever you want on FB. It's all about how you want people to see you.
Although I am a big fan of real books, I mean hard copy purchased in a bookstore, I think that the subject of the book would go better with its online version. It would make more sense. On the other hand, I take books in a bookstore more seriously than the online version. I am a little bit old-fashioned at this point. I love handwritten letters and the smell of freshly printed books.

- Lorena Bezer

………………………………………………………………………….

What I appreciate about what I have read so far is how complex the novel is.
